Now here was a fun project. As I seem to always
make things more difficult than needed, when I decided to turn a
bowl on the lathe I had to make a more interesting design than
necessary. With this as the result, I am glad I did.
To be honest, I can't remember what the main body
of wood is anymore. However, when I chose this piece to turn, I
looked at the internal bands of darker wood within and thus decided
to build on this. I first cut the piece on the bandsaw so I could
alternate the bands horizontally on the top and bottom and
vertically in the middle. Then I went one step further and cut the
middle piece in half with a "wave" design and then sandwiched
alternating bands of thinly re-sawn strips of black walnut and white
pine. I also echoed this design along the top mouth of the bowl. An
interesting design and a unique conversation piece. |
