I have always wanted to own a solid cherry desk so
I finally decided to build one. The desk is build in the
panel-and-frame style I using solid 3/4" cheery for all rails,
stiles, moldings, fascia, doors, drawer fronts, etc., a strong 1"
top working surface, and utilizing more stable cherry veneered
plywood for the various panels. All sliding shelves are build up
from a 3/4" Baltic Birch base with a durable arborite laminate on
top and wrapped in 3/4" solid cherry on all edges. With such, I
designed this desk to house all of my main computer components:
tower, scanner, printer, keyboard and mouse in a manner that hides
these when not in use. The use of full extension drawer slides
allows easy access to all connections in the back of these
components, as well as full exposure for easy use. To achieve the
finish I was looking for, I mixed 1 part Natural Cherry Minwax oil
with 2 parts Red Mahogany then applied several coats of clear satin
polyurethane to all surfaces. For the extra protection on the
working surface, I actually applied 4 coats of high gloss
polyurethane with another 2 coats of clear satin to then take off
the shine while not clouding the finish with multiple coats. |
